A few specific fixes for cecilameyopticians.co.uk

Cecil Amey Opticians · Norwich Haymarket · website rebuild

I rebuild small-business sites in my spare time when I can see they are leaving conversions on the table. I spent half an hour on cecilameyopticians.co.uk this week and three things stood out: Cecil C. Amey and his fourth-generation grandchildren Robert and Emma are nowhere on the homepage despite a century at 22a Haymarket, the navy-on-cream shopfront brand never appears in the hero, and the site carries no Optician or LocalBusiness JSON-LD at all across thirteen practices. Three findings below, then a fully built rebuild you can click through at /preview/.

Three findings, in order of revenue impact

What the live site is leaving on the Haymarket counter.

A walk-through of the live cecilameyopticians.co.uk on 19 May 2026.

01

A century on Haymarket. Cecil C. Amey's 1924 founding, the Amey family lineage and the Norwich flagship address are nowhere on the homepage.

What I saw
The current cecilameyopticians.co.uk opens with a "Celebrating 100 years" heading and a generic stock-photo carousel of model patients in trial frames. Cecil C. Amey, who opened the first Norwich practice in 1924, is never named. Robert Amey (his grandson) and his wife Emma, the current owners and the fourth generation of the family in the firm, are never named. Their sons Dan and William, son-in-law Josh Newman, and daughter-in-law Cristina Amey are never named. 22a Haymarket, the Norwich flagship that has carried the business for the entire century, never appears above the fold. The East Anglian Daily Times centenary feature is not linked.
What it costs
The biggest competitive moat Cecil Amey holds against Specsavers at Castle Mall and Vision Express at the Chapelfield branch is a hundred years on the same Norwich street under the same family name. The website surrenders all of it on entry. A patient comparing the homepage of cecilameyopticians.co.uk against the Specsavers booking page sees an identical stock-photo register on both, and the only deciding factor (a century in Norwich) is invisible.
What the rebuild does
After rebuild: the homepage opens with Cecil C. Amey named in the hero kicker, 1924-2026 surfaced as the date range, Robert and Emma Amey named as the fourth-generation current owners, the EADT centenary feature linked in the heritage block, and Person schema marking up each named family member so AI search assistants can answer "who owns Cecil Amey Opticians Norwich" correctly.
02

The shopfront brand is the navy-on-cream "Cecil Amey" serif wordmark above CHANEL, Lindberg and Tom Ford in the windows. The website hero shows none of it.

What I saw
The Haymarket shopfront leads with the unmistakable navy fascia (#1F2A3E) and the cream-coloured "Cecil Amey" wordmark set in a classical roman serif, with the warm Norfolk brick visible above. The dispensary windows below carry the CHANEL, Lindberg and Tom Ford house cards, and the dispensing floor inside is warm walnut joinery with glass display cabinets. The live homepage hero shows none of this: no photograph of 22a Haymarket, no navy-on-cream brand cue, no signal that this is the practice stocking Lindberg titanium screwless rimless alongside Chanel. A patient who walked past the shop on Haymarket and opened the site at home finds no continuity between the high-street brand and the digital one.
What it costs
Designer dispensing is where independent optometry earns its keep against the chains. Lindberg, Tom Davies and Götti do not retail at Specsavers. The Norwich Cecil Amey shopfront tells that story at street level. The website hides it under a generic carousel that could be running at any of 13,000 independent UK opticians. The visual identity built across a century at 22a Haymarket is doing none of the work it should be doing online.
What the rebuild does
After rebuild: the Haymarket shopfront photograph anchors the hero, the navy-on-cream palette carries through every section, the designer-house roster (Chanel, Lindberg, Tom Ford, Tom Davies, Silhouette, Götti, Salt) is surfaced with care rather than buried five clicks deep, and the JSON-LD `image` field points at a real photo of the practice so cards unfurl correctly in WhatsApp, iMessage and Slack.
03

No Optician or LocalBusiness JSON-LD, no OpeningHoursSpecification, no FAQPage, no AggregateRating. Thirteen practices and Google can read none of them machine-readably.

What I saw
A view-source on the Norwich practice page turns up WordPress and Yoast SEO output but no Optician or LocalBusiness JSON-LD on the homepage, the Norwich practice page or any other practice. The 08:45-17:30 Monday-Friday and 08:45-17:00 Saturday hours appear in display text only, never in OpeningHoursSpecification. The 90 percent recommendation rate across 43 Facebook reviews is invisible to schema. There is no FAQPage block wrapping the customer-voice questions the testimonial page covers. The og:image is a small site-icon style image rather than a recognisable preview card of the Haymarket shopfront.
What it costs
Google's local-pack for "opticians Norwich" or "audiologist NR2" will rank Specsavers (which does have full LocalBusiness schema) above Cecil Amey, even though Cecil Amey has 13 Norfolk and Suffolk practices and Specsavers Norwich has one. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews are increasingly the first stop for "is there a Saturday optician in Norwich city centre" queries; without structured data, the answer cites a chain.
What the rebuild does
After rebuild: full Optician + LocalBusiness JSON-LD on every practice page with PostalAddress, telephone in E.164, geo coordinates for the Haymarket location, OpeningHoursSpecification covering Monday through Saturday (with Sunday explicitly closed), Person schema for Robert and Emma Amey, FAQPage schema wrapping the customer-voice questions, AggregateRating from the verified Facebook 90 percent rate across 43 reviews, and a real og:image pointing to the rebuilt hero photograph. Verified in the Google Rich Results test as part of the launch sequence.
What the rebuild covers

Nine concrete things, fixed, on the live domain.

The /preview rebuild proves the design. Below is the full scope that ships on cecilameyopticians.co.uk after a three-week build.

  1. 01 Custom Astro rebuild served from Vercel's UK edge. Static HTML, sub-1-second TTI on 4G across Norwich and the wider Norfolk catchment. No WordPress runtime, no page-builder JS, drops the multi-megabyte Elementor and theme bundle.
  2. 02 Homepage opens with Cecil C. Amey named, 1924 founding date sourced (East Anglian Daily Times centenary feature, 2024), the navy-on-cream Haymarket shopfront photograph at hero scale, and Robert and Emma Amey named as the fourth-generation current owners.
  3. 03 Designer dispensary surface: Chanel, Lindberg, Tom Ford, Tom Davies, Silhouette, Götti, Salt named with care, with the Lindberg titanium screwless story given the technical detail an independent dispense actually merits.
  4. 04 Optician + LocalBusiness JSON-LD on every practice page. Full PostalAddress, E.164 telephone, geo coords for each branch, OpeningHoursSpecification with Sunday explicitly closed and Monday through Saturday 08:45-17:30 (Saturday closes 17:00 at Norwich).
  5. 05 FAQPage schema wrapping the customer-voice questions mined from the testimonials page and Facebook reviews (free NHS eligibility, audiology integration, Lindberg fitting, dry eye clinics, OCT scans, parking via The Forum).
  6. 06 Audiology page integrated alongside optometry rather than buried in a sub-menu. The Pennington's acquisition (Beccles, Loddon, Lowestoft) and the post-centenary 13-branch footprint properly surfaced.
  7. 07 NHS England GOS eligibility page covering the categories that qualify for free sight tests in England: under-16s, 16-18s in full-time education, over-60s, low-income benefits, diabetes, glaucoma family history, registered sight loss.
  8. 08 Real Google Maps embed on each practice Visit block, parking surfaced for each (The Forum for Norwich), local-pack-ready opening hours displayed alongside the schema.
  9. 09 Editor handover: the Cecil Amey team can update content, swap testimonials, add staff biographies and rotate the designer-frame featured-brand strip via a small markdown-driven content folder without re-engaging the developer.
